Ollie, Stan, and the rest of their army company are set to go 'over the top' in the trenches during World War I, but Stan is ordered to stay behind to defend the track. Following the fighting scenes, the caption 'Armistice' appears. Stan is still operating the post, as seen by the massive pile of bean cans he's accumulated and the trail he's worn, pacing back and forth on guard. He is discovered by chance (after firing on a plane he sees approaching) and is feted as a hero when he returns home. Ollie, married to Mrs. Hardy (Minna Gombell) for a year, sees him in the newspaper and pays him a visit at the Soldiers' Home. He discovers Stan in a wheelchair, having lost a leg, and invites him to his home. Stan, on the other hand, is simply resting in another veteran's wheelchair, and Ollie only discovers he still has both legs after wheeling him around and carrying him. They arrive at Ollie's car, which he claims belongs to his wife and is 'practically new,' but Stan immediately destroys it.
Because they believe the elevator is broken, the two guys begin climbing thirteen flights of stairs to Ollie's apartment. Ollie is insulted by a man (James Finlayson), which leads to a protracted argument. Then they come across a brattish boy (Tommy Bond) with a football, which leads to Ollie kicking his ball down the stairway, resulting in yet another altercation with the kid's hefty father. When Ollie and Stan arrive at the apartment, Ollie's wife objects to him bringing home another jerk, so Ollie is forced to cook supper for Stan, but the two only manage to blow up the kitchen. Mrs. Gilbert (Patricia Ellis), Ollie's gorgeous neighbor, offers to help clean up the mess, but she gets soaked and ends up in a pair of Ollie's giant pajamas. Mrs. Hardy reappears, and Ollie and Stan are forced to hide her. Mrs. Gilbert's husband arrives after Mrs. Hardy finally departs, and when he sees his wife, he chases Stan and Ollie down the stairs, discharging a shotgun. A sizable percentage of males leap from windows.
